Janet Reger: A Brief History:
British designer Janet Reger pushed the boundaries and shaped the future
of the designer and luxury lingerie industry. Known as ‘the Queen
of Luxury Lingerie’. Janet Reger had a unique ability to co-ordinate
cloth with cut, line with fit, and style with practicality and comfort.
When Janet started designing she always looked for the underlying ideas
and then worked out how the garment should be cut and made and as a result
produced beautifully co-ordinated garments. Her creations were a radical
departure from the conventions of the time when lingerie was black or white
except for salmon pink corsets.
In 1953 Reger presented a matching set of designer lingerie – bra, knickers and suspender belt – as her final year presentation at the Leicester College of Technology. She then worked as an in-house designer for various swimwear, underwear and lingerie manufacturers.
When she met her then to be husband, Peter Reger, on a kibbutz in Israel
in 1958, a professional association as well as a personal one was established.
Peter Reger started selling and promoting Janet's products, as well as marrying
her all within three years. Subsequently they had a daughter, Aliza, and
lived in Zurich, for a number of years where Janet Reger was employed as
a freelance designer for a number of European lingerie and swimwear companies.
In 1965 Janet came to London and her exceptional designs were snapped up
by leading London department stores Fenwicks and Selfridges. Follwowing
that success Janet Reger Creations Ltd was established in 1967 and thanks
to media interest her name became synonymous with beautiful sexy luxury
lingerie. Janet Reger then started the hugely successful catalogue entitled
‘The Bottom Drawer’ - offering a range of luxury lingerie that
were beautifully hand-made in luxurious silks. Janet's luxury lingerie perfectly
captured the liberated attitudes of the shifting social climate of the 1960s.
Celebrities from around the world were smitten with Janet’s luxury
designer lingerie, Bianca Jagger, Angie Bowie, and HRH Princess Anne to
name but a few were among the first clientele. in 1978 the actress Joan
Collins wore Janet Reger lingerie in the film “The Stud” For
the first time men dared to buy designer lingerie as a luxury gift for for
their wives and girlfriends. This yet again changed the face of the designer
lingerie industry. Many more celebrity clients were to follow , from Joan
Collins, Princess Margaret and Jerry Hall through to Princess Diana and
today’s generation of young royals.
With the help of her daughter Aliza, Janet Reger built an international business and still continued to push the quality and design of all her luxury lingerie. From the early nineties onward, well known American stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, and Nordstrum, as well as a string of boutiques on Beverly Hills' famous Rodeo Drive, all stocked Janet Reger items, whose charm extended as far as Japan and Dubai.
Janet Reger sadly passed away in 2005, Aliza Reger, her daughter, who learnt the business from an early age, has taken the company forward and kept the Reger luxury lingerie reputation alive and stronger than ever.
